Custom Satellite Dish!!! (a.k.a. Cone of Shame!)

Here is my solution to the giant "satellite dish" problem . . .

I've cut and trimmed and shaped this over the years into a "perfect" shape.  It's easy to use, it just slips on with a little push—no fastening of anything, tight enough though that they can't get it off.  It doesn't freak out the dog and doesn't crash into everything including your shins.

None of my three dogs have been able to get it off or get to the injured area you are trying to protect, yet I can slip it on or off in 2 seconds.  If you have a houdini dog you can punch a few holes in the neck area run some zip-tie loops and slide a collar through the loops.  They can eat and drink with no problem.  Carefully note the shape in the photos below as the complex curves are what make it work.

Only two tools needed—strong scissors and a hole punch, and two zip ties.  Cut a little bit at a time to get the shape you want and the neck hole size that is just right for most of your dogs, if you cut too much at once you can't go back!

Comparison to the usual satellite dish!!!

Flat shape compared: top opaque one shows the pattern to cut it into from the original circle.  If you don't have the type with the slide through strip you can pucch holes and zip-tie it closed in the cone shape.

Detail of side shaping with punched holes, close holes together with zip ties (see photo below).  Be sure to cut the shape first, then overlap to the shape you want and then punch the holes in one side, then line them up again and punch the other side so they match up on top of each other perfectly.  (Otherwise it will be hard to slide the zip tie through.)

Happy dog in her custom hood!
